Condition report

Also called damage check sheet

A condition report is the record of a vehicle’s state at handover and at return, used to establish what damage occurred during the hire.

Traditionally a diagram with marks on it; increasingly a set of photographs with timestamps. Without one at both ends, a damage charge is an assertion rather than a claim, and most hirers know it.
